Symantec Backup Exec 2010 causes VSS (Volume Shadow Copy Service) error

I get the following errors in Event Viewer after running a backup job in Backup Exec 2010.  The backup job will fail and sometimes the Backup Exec Remote Agent service will abort.


Event ID 13

Volume Shadow Copy Service information: The COM Server with CLSID {790f2886-9889-4c99-8ef5-531add05d044} and name SW_PROV cannot be started. [0x8007007e]

I don't know if this is relevant, but shadow copy fails for me when disk space on c: gets low.

C: drive is partitioned for 100GB with 65GB available.

open a command prompt and type 'vssadmin list writers', this will give you a list of all the writers used for shadow copies and whether any are in a failed state.

It looks like some of the components of VSS and the Microsoft VSS software provider are not registered correctly.
You will probably have to execute the commands mentioned in the resolution section of http://support.microsoft.com/kb/940032 or http://support.microsoft.com/kb/940184
