I have just started with ASP.NET and MS SQL programming.
I am currently following the steps listed in this tutorial

http://www.asp.net/security/tutorials/creating-the-membership-schema-in-sql-server-cs

Using MS Visual Web Developer Express 2010 and SQL Server Express 2010

In Solution Explorer, I right clicked app_data, add an item, selected data, SQL server database, named it userdb.mdf.
Then I switched to Database Explorer and double clicked userdb.mdf and it was able to connect fine and as expected it listed the empty folders - Tables, Views etc.
Connection String property shows data source as .\SQLEXPRESS

Next I launched %WINDIR%\Microsoft.NET\Framework\v4.0.30319\aspnet_regsql.exe

I entered following details
Server : .\SQLEXPRESS
Selected "Windows Authentication"
Now when I try to select the DB from Database drop down, I do not see userdb. I only see master, model, msdb, and tempdb. What am I missing?

Thanks!

Ok, I was able to type the DB name in that drop down. The wizard completed without showing any errors. However, there are no tables in the DB!!!

Finally got it ... Detach the DB in VWD, Right click the DB, Modify Connection - Use SQL server instead of DB from file.
