French/spanish characters in Smarty template

Hi, it's my first project with smarty.

The text in the template contains spanish and french characters and when I 'use' the template these characters are not shown, however, the information from the db is ok when published and it also has those characters.

Where should I change the charset or what should I do with Smarty ? template ? php config ? should I decode/encode the template before using it ? should I save it in another format ?

Thanks in advance!

Thanks Ray, unfortunately that didn't solve the problem.

The solution was saving the template file in Unix/ANSI format.
