Does backup plugin for exchange 2007 sp2 run automatic?

I have read that exchange 2007 SP1 does not do a proper backup using windows server backup.  I have upgraded my service packs to SP3.  I now have the exchange plugin for WSB.  Does it require configuration?  or do I just run the backup according to

You can run the back up as per the instructions given on technet. There is no additional configuration required.

Do you know of any other programs besides backupexec symantec to cover multiple servers?  I am shopping for something different.
