fxs port randomly goes out of service

Hi there,
We sometimes have VG224 or an 8-port FXS module in ISR 3845 router to connect analog extensions. What happens is that sometimes the ports regularly go out of service. What I have to do is to shut/noshut the port manually and then it comes back up fine. Next morning, the port is again out of service and we have to manually shut/noshut it to bring it back to service. Happens randomly on different ports.

Is it faulty port ? or faulty device ? or is there a known behavior with these devices ? Any comments would be appreciated !

It is very very unlikely that both VG224 and 3845 are faulty. Last 10 years I haven't seen any Cisco FXS port going bad.
  • Check mgcp configuration by inspecting output of show ccm-manager . Verify the CCM ip addresses, check failure counts etc. Also check the output of show mgcp statistics for failures.

  • A network issue might be causing it. MGCP sends keepalives every 15 seconds by default. If CCM missed several consecutive keepalives, it assumes the port is down. Can you capture MGCP debugs from both devices overnight until it happens? Make sure you capture everything. Log it to a syslog server if necessary. The following
debug mgcp error
debug mgcp packet
or just enable all MGCP debugs by "debug mgcp all".
If you find bad ports in the morning, go through your logs to find any abnormal MGCP activity.

Ok, I'll run the debugs in the meantime and show commands to capture information next time it happens.B/w can i ask what version of ios are you also using on your 3845 that has been running stable ? Since it happens on multiple sites randomly (not all that often), so am thinking it maybe the IOS too !

Hi,
Your IOS image version has to be compatible with your CCM/CUCM version. Please refer to the System Release Summary Matrix which shows which IOS version you should use.
