Exchange Activesync access external vs internal for iPhone/iPad users

I have an Exchange 2003 implementation with business users who access it via their iPhone/iPads using the OWA SSL URL.   The domain name referenced in the configuration is our external one, and our firewall  handles the inbound request.  The same users, when using these devices on our internal LAN, cannot access email because the URL is invalid (internal server and domain name are different).  I thought that perhaps all I need to do is enter a CNAME or A record on my internal DNS server to point the external DNS name to the internal server, but did not want to screw things up.  Suggestions would be appreciated.

you are correct - you need to create an A record for your external domain on your internal DNS server.

you will need to add records for www (and any others) if you want internal users to still find your web server also
