SharePoint Deliverables Task Tracking Method

My organization currently uses a sharepoint task list to assign various trackers and other items to the responsibile groups.

I am looking for a way to track the completion of deliverables over time and see outstanding group performers (possibly individuals) and use it as a performance metric.

Is there some sort of reporting matrix native in sharepoint in which I could generate reports/spreadsheets on ontime/late deliverables over time? If so, where?

The only way I know to achieve this, is by using a SharePoint Designer workflow.  Then you can create a separate list where the workflow can store the performance statistics every time a task is finished.

To improve the integrity of the data, I'd also modify the edit/view forms in the task list to remove the users' ability to delete or modify the tasks outside the workflow.
