google maps embedded in vb.net application

Hi. I have many questions related to this topic.

First of all: Is it possible to embedded google maps into a desktop application?

2nd: Is it legal? is it permitted? Because so far, I have understand that the only permitted usage of goggle maps is in free acces web pages.......is it correct?

I have an application in VB.Net that needs to show the position of an item every certain time.

I have a list of geo positions ( Latitude and longitud ) and I need to show them on the map.

Can somebody guive me some orientation,?

Thanks

I can answer part of this, but I have never embedded a Google Map in a desktop application.  The maps are drawn in real time, so an embedded map would seem kind of counter-intuitive.

Yes, that is correct unless you purchase a license from Google.

If your VB.Net application can query the Google Maps API, you can retrieve a map image file in PNG or JPG format.  You can have very fine-grained control over the size, shape, zoom level, and icons on the map.

I have an article here at EE that teaches about this in PHP.  Not directly applicable, but worth looking over.  You may be able to see analogous code constructs that would be helpful in VB.
