Convert Mixed Fraction To Double

Does anyone know of a simple way to convert a mixed fraction string to a double?

Say I'm reading in a comma delimited file, and I read "8 3/4 IN", and want to remove the end text and translate the rest ("8 3/4") to 8.75. How could I accomplish this?
