Cannot access exchange 2007 server remotely via outlook.

I recently did a bunch of updates on my Windows Server 2008 Standard 64-bit running Exchange 2007 64-bit.

After doing all the updates, I then noticed a few hours later that i am unable to connect to my exchange server remotely unless i VPN to my network first and then hit send and receive in outlook.

Any ideas?

OWA works just fine. I did some research and came across this article....

http://office.microsoft.com/en-us/outlook-help/use-outlook-anywhere-to-connect-to-your-exchange-server-without-vpn-HP010102444.aspx

is it nessecary to do this to connect to my exchange remotely without VPN?

I feel like in the past i did connected without having ever setting anything up anything in that article.

Maybe i just always VPN'd in and today i did updates and then noticed its not working unless i am connected via VPN, so i am now making a big deal out of it? =)

You need to have Outlook anywhere enabled for connecting Outlook to Exchange without VPN. (Assuming Outlook users are on Internet, not in local network).

ISA server is not necessarily required. You can folow the below technet link.

Problems using Powershell and Active Directory?

Managing Active Directory does not always have to be complicated.  If you are spending more time trying instead of doing, then it's time to look at something else. For nearly 20 years, AD admins around the world have used one tool for day-to-day AD management: Hyena. Discover why

If ISA isn't required how can i go back to the way it may of been before where i wasn't using outlook anywhere nor VPN?

Outlook Anywhere uses RPC over HTTPS to establish a connection to your Exchange server when they're not connected to VPN. Running windows updates sometimes interferes with the HTTP settings. Make sure that a) your windows firewall is not enabled to block HTTPS incoming access b) you can access your OWA using HTTPS remotely without having to connect to VPN first.

If HTTPS is not working locally and remotely, you might want to try running: IISRESET

That's right. There's no other for your Outlook to connect to the Exchange server without the VPN (Or DirectAccess which I'm pretty sure you're not using, needs Windows 7 and 2008 R2).

If your Outlook Anywhere is not configured, you can use smartsid's link above to set it up.
