Not all Emails being received by Microsoft outlook 2007 and outlook express

Hi
I have just installed a new PC for a customer running windows 7 Home premium and set up his email account in Microsoft 2007 and configured it to leave a copy of the email messages on the server for 14 days (ISP is Virgin).  Their old PC is set-up along side it running windows XP and outlook express also configured to leave a copy on the sever for 14 days.

Both machines can send and recieve meassages, but the problem is that some emails are only comimg to one machine or the other, quite frankly I would not have believed the customer unless i had seen this with my own eyes, I would have assummed that the missing emails were probably in the junk/spam folder.  This is not the case.

I have checked weather the missing emails are perhaps coming from one sender, this is not the case either so the problem appears to be quite random.  I have checked for the missing emails on the virgin mail server and they are sitting there, but will not download to both machines - only one or the other.
This is really baffling me and the customer is also wooried that he is not going to get all his emails when the old machine finally dies.  Any help to resolve thios issue would be graetly appreciated

Hi

As clarification - is the email account POP3?  IMAP?

If the service your customer is using is POP3, it may be something as simple as once the messages are downloaded to computer 1 they are no longer marked "new" on the server.  Outlook polls the server for "new" pop3 messages in send and receive, therefore even if a copy is left on the server, it's possible outlook will not download it, because it is no longer "new".  Workaround could be to simply mark as unread after download on computer 1.  This should make send/receive work on computer 2 for all messages.

I would suggest that you install Service Pack 2 for Office (Outlook) 2007 on your new PC. You can also start with a fresh PST file there, as it will pick up again all emails for the last 14 days.
On the old PC, you can also run Microsoft Updates and perhaps start with a fresh copy of Outlook Express email database files. Alternatively, you can install instead "Microsoft Mail" (which can be freely downloaded) and see how it behaves then.

Hi

Thank you 4 getting back so quickly, for clarifiaction the email account is pop3.  I have been onto the virgin server and there are not a lot of things that i can change there.  I can certainly try and change the setting in Outlook express to not to mark mail as read when downloaded, but I can't find a similar setting in microsoft outlook 2007. I will get customer to try try this and I will get back to you over the weekend with the results.

this still doesn't explan why outlook 2007 is getting some mail that outlook express is not.

The old computer is basically on it's last legs and I have only set it up so they can transfer their data over, with regards to changing email clients - the customer won't entertain as the want to stay with what they are familar with.

thank you for trying to help
