Automatic logging into SYSTEM user account on boot

I am trying to disinfect a laptop that is running Win XP Pro. It appeared to be infected by a trojan even though it was running Trend Micro AV so upon receiving the laptop I removed the harddrive and plugged it into my own desktop via a caddy and scanned it with Norton Internet Security 2010 to clean the infection. It found a few instances of trojans in the system32 folder: It found an infection for Trojan.ADH in 'userinit.exe' and also Trojan.adclicker in the file 'updata.exe' and also Backdoor.Tidserv!inf. It automatically cleaned the adclicker and backdoor but needed manual removal of the userinit.exe file. I removed it manually but copied back a new copy from my own clean machine running xp pro so that I could log in to the laptop at startup. I then put the harddrive back and booted the machine.
The laptop is configured to log into a domain at the owners office and also has a local account to log in to - which is the account he uses. So the machine, previously, would load up and give the logon screen (Ctrl, Alt, Delete to log on). But now when it boots the machine logs into the System user account automatically. So whilst the computer is booting and still showing the logon screen the computer is also logging into the stsyem account in the background. We can't use the computer until logging into the default user account which loads over the top of the system account. So I get to see the desktop and icons for the system account and when I ctrl, alt, delete and enter the defualt username and password and log on the desktop for this account loads up over the system account. If I then open up task manager and go to the processes tab I can see 5 instances of iexlpore running and 2-3 instances of explorer running. If I end the iexplore processes and all the explorer processes and then re-start explorer the system seems to run ok but clearly I want to resolve this problem as the user can't do this everytime he boots the machine! Other irritations are that the explorer window opens automatically and randomly as well as ie8.
So far I have looked through the registry - HKLM\Software\Microsoft|WindowsNT\Winlogon to see if the stsyem is set for automatic log on and it isn't and the default user settings are correct..... I also looked into the Group Policy settings to see if any scripts or such are set to run at boot but none are either..... I posted this topic on an alternative forum and in doing so ran some tools to show the processes running on the machine once booted and logged on. The program is called DDS and the site is bleepingcomputer. They also ask to run another program called GMER so I will attach those logs to this post in the hope that they help you diagnose the problem. If you need me to run any additional tools then let me know.

Thanks in advance!

Same Ticket found on onother site. SHAMEFUL

Have placed incase the issue is resolved there, then others can find it.

http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/lofiversion/index.php/t346818.html
myhc: I mentioned in the description above that I had listed this problem on bleepingcomputer........ additionally I have had absolutely no responce from there which is why I am also listing it here.... Confused as to the 'SHAMEFUL' comment. I will update that listing should this get resolved via EE.
Shameful was a s ajoke to going somethere else first. EE is always the way forward.

How did you get on with Combofix?
che6ausc: I'd already found those threads and checked previously. None of them resolve the issue. There is no listing for a hidden account in the registry and no automatic login is set up

myhc: Ah, I understand! And yes you are right in that I should have come here first! This has always been the place to come to guarantee a resolution. I will never make the mistake of going anywhere else in future!! I have learned my lesson ;)
As for combofix the guy who owns the machie has been running it for the last few days. I showed him how to end the processes on boot up as a temporary workaround. He's bringing the machine back to me as we speak. Should have it up here in next 30 mins.
The problem may be the fact that you replaced the userinit.exe file with the file from your computer.  It contains the logon scripts and reestablishes network connections.  This would not be the same from one user to another.

Do a sfc /scannow to repair the userinit.exe and any other file which may have become corrupted due to the infections which you encountered.
If you have not completely deleted the userinit.exe file, then restore it as the best option.

Some information about system file checker: http://www.updatexp.com/scannow-sfc.html.
che6ausc: I have previously tried that and tried it again to no avail.

myhc: Have run combo fix and it appears to have done the trick! :)  Here is the log:

Infected copy of c:\windows\system32\userinit.exe was found and disinfected
Restored copy from - c:\windows\system32\dllcache\userinit.exe

The problem was the userinit.exe file. A sfc /scannow should have also worked since it restores the file from the same place.
myhc: Combofix seems to have done the trick :) Is there anythingn else I'll need to do? DOes the log suggest any additional areas that may need looking at ?

Thanks!
Afternoon,  Glad it worked. I see that it also helped you solve your other request( indirectly ).

Anyway, I have had a quick look through your log and can't see anything else that causes concern.
Glad to be of help.

Yes a combofix fix all round ;)

Thanks for your help
