Sharepoint WSS 3.0 People Picker Slow

I'm running Sharepoint WSS 3.0 in Windows Server 2008.  I've got a list item of people type.  The people picker on the form takes a long time to search.  We are using a single domain globally with an estimate of 40,000 users in AD.

Is there a way to improve performance of people picker?  Is there a way to limit the search in a specific world region?

Thanks.  Seems like my best option is to import AD profile into SharePoint.  I just found out that we have around 102,000 records in AD.
