Page header and footer
When a report is run i get this error shown on the enclosed jpg
Page header and footer longer than page
The length of the report will vary depending upon the amount of information is picks up. In other words sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn't. How do I can the page header and footer to adjust itself so it works all the time and not being dependant upon the amount of information in the report

You need to control the "can grow" fields or subreports that you're placed on the header or footer, they're getting too large.

When I go to format subreport the number of lines is disabled or greyed out

Uncheck "Can Grow"
Why do you have a subreport in the page header section ?
What would you like to happen if the information in tne subreport is too big to fit on a page?

Since a page must have a page header and footer, they have to fit on the page otherwise it is trying to go to the next page which means the page header starts again but the page header and footer aren't done fromthe previous page.
The only way to do this would be to limit the number of records the subreport through suppression or filter.

Are you sure you want the subreport in the page header/footer? Does it need to be on each page or can you put it in the report header/footer

I think that if you try to put a subreport in a page footer or in a page header , you are restricted to one page for this section and no more..
maybe you should try to build a group that contains all the data ( like company no if exists ) and put your subreport in the group footer section.

I dont have any sub reports in the page header or the page footer. They are all contained in a group header or group footer
However it still gives me this error when I run reports over a certain length

BTW unchecking can grow doesn't activate the maximum number of records

That is for TEXT fields to limit them to a number of lines.
I don't see anything in the report that should be doing that.
One thing you might do is uncheck the SUPPRESS option when you use a formula.
Is it a specific number of records that causes the problem?

I think it's the number of records on a page. The record can vary in depth depeneding on the information contained in it. I think sometimes it just goes over the length of the page and causes this error. I don't know how to tell it if it gets to a certain point to move the information to the next page. I have tried the obvious, ie keep together etc
