XP Pro will ping 192.168.1.6 (NAS) but on start run \\192.168.1.6 - error (another xp home will connect)

Can I clear / refresh / do something on this xp pro laptop?

It wont map to the drive either, yet another laptop on same network (is an xp home) will connect no problem.

I spent a lot of time thinking it was the NAS and all along it was this fussy XP SP3 laptop.
I has an Operating system thats only about three months old.

More info ..........

on start run
\\192.168.1.6
Error - "The network path is not found"

If I go to map the drive, it simply hangs when I find the client name.
If I put in the IP address, it hangs as well or give an error.

A couple of things to start with:

1. You need to connect to a share: \\192.168.1.6\folder
2. You should turn simple file sharing off if it is enabled
3. Make sure File and Print sharing are enabled (TCP/IP connection dialogue).

1. Please check your ip address's on the two computers and make they are in the same subnet

What kind of firewall/security software do you have installed on the computer? How many other clients are connected to the NAS at any given time?

Any other ideas? - same problem

Hi thinkpad user:

1. You need to connect to a share: \\192.168.1.6\folder
\\192.168.1.6\files   - same problem  (on this laptop other one is ok)
2. You should turn simple file sharing off if it is enabled
It was [ ] unchecked already - so I  left unchecked
3. Make sure File and Print sharing are enabled (TCP/IP connection dialogue).
It was [x ] checked - I left it checked.

I guess as a last resort you could reset your tcp/ip stack using http://www.snapfiles.com/get/winsockxpfix.html

> They are, its a very simple setup.  DHCP auto on everything.  3 laptops.
The XP Pro laptops x 2 are both having issues.  The XP home is fine.  Very odd.

> I have Zone Alarm but Ive disabled it.  MS Firewall is off.  On the second XP Pro laptop it has MS firewall only.

Its just a test situation at the moment.

I was thinking the same myself.  Good old winsock.  I have a copy. Will give it a whirl.

I love the sound of that loud beep at the end !

fcek - I did check your first post, but is there any possibility there are security settings on the NAS that permit the two existing machines but have not yet allowed the newer machine?  ... Thinkpads_User

Thanks everyone that kept me fighting for an answer, I was near giving up.  The dog was about to give up the bone.

I uninstalled Zone Alarm  / rebooted and i was able to right click my computer - map a network drive. Fixed.

The other XP Pro laptop that had the same problem yesterday (hasnt Zone Alarm) now connects.  Go figure.

Ive spent a lot of time on this (a few hours of a few days) on this and another NAS and it was Zone Alarm all along.
