HOW TELSTRA IP WAN WORKS?

Hi,

Our  Company has 5 Branch offices and we would like to deploy Leased WAN connection to our Head Office.

So could anyone advice how the Telstra IP WAN Network works.

Like how the leased line from my Brach offices connect to HO and does Telstra provide 5 leased line to my HO for each Brach office or they will create six  /30 subnets , each branch office and HO will reacive one /30 subnet each and the routing will be performed by Testra?

Is that how it works or please advice how it actually works with Telstra?

Thanks

Not sure about Telstra specifically.  Some of your questions are probably better answered by their pre-sales tech support.

If you are using leased lines, (UNLESS you are contracting with the WAN link provider to ALSO manage your network) you normally manage the IP address space, that is the subnet addressing, masking etc.

You may wish to work with a consultant to determine what you really want before you order any leased or other outside communication services.

Depending on your bandwidth requirements (how fast you need your communications to be and how much data you will be moving in a given time period) you may or may not need leased lines.  If bandwidth needs are not too great, you might be able to connect the sites using virtual private networking (VPN) over your existing or upgraded Internet access.  VPN is as secure and sometimes more secure than leased lines.

Basically, you may wish to weigh the pros and cons of leased lines (which are being used less and less) compared to VPN over the Interned.  Over simplified, least lines are much more expensive (for both capital and operational expenses) but can provide more bandwidth; whereas VPN is much cheaper (some capital cost depending on your existing firewalls and little if any operational cost) and if your Internet bandwidth is fairly broad/fast can be nearly or just as fast.

Before getting a leased line for a given link I would consider if your Internet bandwidth can be bumped up to match whatever is available via the lease line you are looking to contract.  I have come into a number of client sites that had leased lines that were actually SLOWER than their Internet access.  In the latter cases, I have dumped the leased lines and replaced them with VPN improving interoffice communications speeds and dropping costs several fold.
