BlackBerry Bold 9700 does not indicate charging when connected to USB port

When I attach my BlackBerry Bold 9700 to any usb port on my computer, the charge indicator does not appear.  (Hence, I assume that it is not charging.)  I have the BlackBerry Desktop Software installed and I was under the impression that this was all that was required for charging to occur via a USB connection.  However, this does not seem to be working.
