PS and PCL spool

Dear all,

I am trying to get my head around print drivers. PS and PCL seem to be the 2 main ones.

Now here is what I have encountered:

If I move a print job across the network, the release printer recognizes the settings. Which leads me to believe that all a driver needs is the PS file generated.

However the PS file is in essence a set of 2 files. One is the SHL and the other is the SPL.  Given that all the driver reads of the print job is inside those 2 files is it possible to alter the print job properties from that spool file?

If not then how does the driver know the correct properties if the originating application is not even on the server (moving scenario). All the information regarding that print job must be inside those spool files right?

Can i use Ghost script to edit the PS and hence the job properties (like colour to Mono)

Regards
Sam

btw, in most print drivers when you add them to a server you can set these properties as default, e.g. only print double sided or print b/w unless a password is input.  YOu can also enter this info on the printers management page if its a bigger printer, even the older HP laserjets have URLs with web management.  Just in case you were over complicating a task.
Yep, or even a mono driver....
If you don't need the extra functionality of the device you could simply use a mono only driver from a different device.

Thanks for your help everyone.

I was hoping to edit my PS files but from what ive read recently its far too much information located inside the PS file.

Correct me if  i am wrong but the PS is a detailed page description of the print job so its next to impossible to go in and edit over 1000 lines of code to change it to Mono.

At least it gives me some clarity
thanks again
It wouldn't be my cup of tea, control it as it's created :-)
