Backup exec 12 all media labels are red x

Today all the media is labeled red with an "X".
No media is accepted for backup.
I've tried doing an inventory, that' makes it available but then the backup
rejects it and fails.
Google searches on this are inconclusive, so far.
What's the problem?
Thanks

After you inventoried the tape did you check the Media tab to see which media set the tape was placed under? It's probably set to Imported, which does not allow overwrite. Associate the tape to a media set that allows overwrite or you can create a new media set and associate the tape to it.

It's not set to imported.
It's in a group that allows overwrite after a time period.
According to the rules, it's can be overwritten.
I have also tried moving it to scratch.

This machine and set of tapes have been in use for a couple of years with
no problems. This tape has been in this group for many months and has been put through in
rotation. But now Backup exec has decided that everything is offline and not writable.
Are you saying your tape drive is showing offline?

the tape drive is online, every tape  shown in the right panel under the media tab  in the "media label"  column is red with an X.  The drive itself is ok, and can perform an inventory
