Fresh install of Windows XP SP3, all updates. Avira, Superantispware, Prevx all running. AMD Phenom 9600, Asus Crossfire MG. I had a bad problem with computer locking up hard with any file management, so in desperation I reformatted and did a fresh Win XP reinstall. Only loaded a few key programs. The problem persisted on the fresh system, so I thought it might be a hardware issue. Event manager showed "SidebySide errors" when the freeze  happened. This was mostly corrected by running  the C++ redistributable package available here:

But the computer still locks up when doing anything in IE8. After a few mouse clicks, the mouse no longer works, then with the next click, a beep sounds and the computer is completely frozen, requiring power down.
I tried resetting IE8 as per this MS site instructions:
No help.
Event viewer no longer shows the SideBySide error under System, but shows userNV error under Application. "properties" of that error suggest "faulty registration"

Any thoughts greatly appreciated

Thanks for any suggestions
