What capacity do you need?  USB or eSATA or Network connection?

... as for a "good hard drive"  ==>  If you're buying a drive for external storage, the Western Digital Caviar Green series drives are excellent.    They run slightly slower than their 7200rpm brothers, but run MUCH Cooler.   I've got more than a dozen of the 2TB drives and they're superb units.     I prefer the EADS series to the EARS units (which use the newer "advanced format" for the drives and can have compatibility issues with older OS's).

Hi Guys,
Thanks.  I was thinking probably 1TB.  My goal with the external enclosure was so I could have add additional drives down the road which would be cheaper than the full drive an enclosure.  I don't imagine that I will have it running much.

I am not really sure about these options, can someone please explain which is best?  My needs are pretty flexible.

USB or eSATA or Network connection
You'll get the fastest speeds with an eSATA drive;  but for what you've described as your needs I'd just go with a 1TB USB MyBook:  http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16822136395

Runs very cool; turns itself off when you're not using it (well, actually goes into a very low power standby mode if the PC's on;  off if the PC's off);  and is exceptionally reliable.    I've got virtually all of the options -- a 24TB network server for media storage;  5 internal drives for the main system;  2 eSATA docks;  and 4 USB drives.    Of all of these, my 2 MyBook's are what I recommend the most.
Thanks guys
