Master-Detail with the GridView, DetailsView and ModalPopup Controls without full page postback?

Hi Experts

I have another question based around this which has gone dead so am attempting again, but froma different angle.

I am attempting to recreate something simialr to this example http://mattberseth.com/blog/2008/04/masterdetail_with_the_gridview.html

Basically a bound grid view with each row containing a link to open a modal window displaying an editable details view relating to the selected row.

If you download and run the example above you will see that it works fine, except for the fact that it initiates a full page postback whenever the modal window is displayed. This means that the underlying grid view either needs to have viewstate enabled or be rebound everytime the modal window is displayed, which seems to defeat the purpose of using AJAX to start with.

Is there a way I can recreate this functionality without having to postback the entire grid view?

Thanks
