Why can't I install a Windows 2008 R2 Domain Controller into an existing domain

I am having difficulty installing a Windows 2008 R2 domain controller into an existing domain.  When I run dcpromo.exe, I get an error message saying "To intall a domain contoller into an Active Directory domain, you must firest prepare the domain using "adprep /domainprep". The Adprep utility is available on the Windows Server 2008 R2 installation media in the \support\adprep folder.

So I went to an existing domain contoller and ran adprep /domainprep from the Win 2K8 R2 DVD and I get the following:
Running domainprep ...
Domain-wide information has already been updated.
[Status/Consequence]
Adprep did not attempt to rerun this operation.

I then go back to my original server and run dcpromo, and I get the same message all over again.  Ideas?  (Yes, I have run forestprep from the same R2 install media)

Thank you.

Your existing domain is 2003, 2008 or 2008R2?
Also curious as to what the domain functional level is, as well as the other DC's OSes.

See domain prep: http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc754670(WS.10).aspx
See forest prep: http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc753437(WS.10).aspx

The forest functional level is Windows 2003, and the domain ductional Level is Window Server 2008.  Other DC's in this domain are running Windows 2K8 (NOT R2).
Did you run /forestprep?
Eh, please disregard, didn't notice your last sentence. Did you check if schema was successfully extended and ObjectVersion attribute is set to 44?

To check objectVersion:

   1. Install LDP.exe from Support Tools on a DC running Windows 2000 or Windows 2003.
   2. Run LDP.exe, go to Connection and then click on Bind.
   3. Click Ok. Next click on View, Tree and then select the following LDAP path from the dropdown list: CN=Schema,CN=Configuration,DC=domain,DC=com
   4. Click Ok to run the LDP query against the above LDAP Path.
   5. In Right Pane, check objectVersion: 44 attribute. If it is 44 Admin /ForestPrep was run successfully.
Ok, I ran the LDP.exe and followed your instructions.  My object version is 47.
It was to verify that you've successfully ran /forestprep. 44 is for Windows 2008 and 47 is for 2008 R2.  If you have more than one site, are there any problems with replication?
