Safe to cancel "stsadm" backup of WSS 3.0? For some reason it's taking FOREVER

We currently have a WSS 3.0 setup on one of our servers. I use a backup script every night to back up Sharepoint using "stsadm.exe -o backup ...". For some reason last night's backup is taking forever (much longer than normal). Is it safe to just close this command prompt window to return Sharepoint to a read/write state? I don't want to break anything, but business has started and we need to be able to make changes to Sharepoint.

Yes, it's safe to kill STSAdmin if it is performing a backup.

It looks like when I did this the site remained in a "locked" state. I used an stsadm command to unlock the site collection and was good to go. Thanks guys!
