I get the above exception when running under Visual Studio 2010 and the exception window points to this line of code:
Html.DropDownList("RoleList", "Choose a role...")

But I successfully execute this line of code in the Controller
ViewData["RoleList"] = new SelectList(roleList, "role_id", "role_name");

This does not make sense to me.

Please let me know if you see it...

Thanks,
