Windows Server 2008/Windows 7 File Shares Disconnecting
I have a strange problem which I am currently unable to fix - hopefully someone can help.
There are about 5 client PCs connecting to a 6 month old Dell Poweredge Windows Server 2008 server. Some are pretty old and running XP, they have no problems. There are two new Dell Vostro Windows 7 PCs that both experience the same problem, but not necessarily at the same time.
They lose access to the file shares on the server for around 1 minute, it then comes back by itself. The shares go offline and they cannot access anything that isn't cached on the local PC.
This has been going on for a while and I've yet to find an answer. I've used one PC as a guinea pig for fixes and nothng has worked - I've tried disabling all the advanced 'features' of the intergrated Broadcom network card on the PC (flow control, WOL etc), turning off RDC and installing a DLink PCI NIC which I've just found has also not fixed the problem.
I can't find anything to help this on the internet so I'm hoping someone has seen this before.
Thanks in advance,
Phil

You should setup a ping test on the machine, perhaps in a login script. The user could give you the time of the occurrence, you could search through the logs and look for any connectivity between the workstation and the server for the matching time.
Have you checked the event logs during the time period for any hints ?

When it happens, can the user go to \\servername\share?
Check on AV software causing problems or scanning the files when the issue happens.
Update the NIC drivers on the Windows 7 PCs as well.

I've tried AV - they have Sophos, I took it off the PC and installed Microsoft Security Essentials as a test, no change. I've tried NIC driver updates. She's logged the time the problems occur and I've checked the event log, nothing useful is logged at the time of the problem.
I have been advised to try turning off SMB 2.0 so I'll try this and see what happens. Failing that, I guess it could be a switch fault causing poor ping times occasionally.

I have the same issue. Disconnects only last a few seconds so it's not possible to check anything. Can't reproduce the error. Also have replaced the network switch.

I'm still waiting to hear back from the client, she's been off and I've been away on holiday as well so will update with progress next week hopefully
