We want to install SCCM but I am not sure what the Server spec should be?

The topology of out network:-

We have a main site of 3000 machines and then 8 other small sites with between 20 and 200 machines at each.  The links between these sites are also at verying speeds from 10mb to 1GB.

We have a SAN that we could create the servers and store the data on.  THis SAN has both FIbre channel  and SATA disks with 1GB switch  which we then have large host servers which could house virtual servers for the SCCM.  Or should we buy a number of large powerful Physical servers?

I know microsoft suggest a single box but if you read further on technet or speak to people that run training courses in SCCM  they recommended having the front end of SCCM on one server and the database are a different server as long as the link between the two is fast enough.

My question really is what would people recommend for the spec and what configuration.  Single server or split role?  SAN and virtual machine or physical server?  and what memory, processor, disk size etc?
