I recently noticed an error message I havent seen before on vista, "Windows defender failed to initialise (error code 0x8000106ba)" on startup.

Ive had a look on here and found that several others have had this also, im using Kaspersky.

I also tried since then to install some windows updates, but this now fails and wont install them.
I havent installed any new programs so not sure what has kicked this off ?

I have worked through some of the suggestions on experts exchange,

https://www.experts-exchange.com/OS/Microsoft_Operating_Systems/Windows/Windows_Vista/Q_24282807.html?sfQueryTermInfo=1+10+defend

and here
http://support.microsoft.com/KB/931849

Ive checked through the files that should be present in the
C:\Program Files\Windows Defender\  folder and they are all present & correct

If i run "appwiz.cpl"

I dont see windows defender in the list.
So now I have got to the stage of trying to remove and re-install defender, but
i got some message about service already installed.

Lastly i tried this per the microsoft site,

Click Start, click Run, type regsvr32 file name, and then click OK.

Note In this step, file name is a placeholder for the following files.

Repeat this procedure for the following files:
wuapi.dll
wuaueng.dll
wucltui.dll
wups.dll
wuweb.dll
atl.dll
softpub.dll
wintrust.dll
initpki.dll
mssip32.dll

Some of these load ok, but these below return a "failed" message
wuaueng.dll
wucltui.dll
wups.dll
wuweb.dll
wintrust.dll
initpki.dll

Where now ? hope someone can point me in the right direction !
