One of my customers is having a consistent issue with their exchange server it seems. They problem was first noticed because of a bubble popping up for outlook users saying outlook is trying to connect to the exchange server. The virtual exchange server is the machine having the problem.
When this first began i did a simple ping test, and sure enough, between every 20-40 seconds i will get a second where the pings either time out or come back at >1500ms. I found article
which points to a faulty nic. Going with this, i started at the cable, replaced it, no change. I changed the port that i was using on the switch, no change. I then guessed it was a nic issue (no redundant connections in the HP ML310). After swapping the board out it seemed fine for a couple days, then the problems began again. This server is a Server 2003 OS running in a virtual machine on ESXi 3.5
Even though the problem persisted after changing ports on the switch, it does not affect another server if connected to the same port. I have changed power outlets on the APC unit (to rule out a inconsistent ground), and have factory reset the switch.
The problem doesn't seem to be dns related as it happens when pinging directly to the ip as well.
Finally we swapped out the server (carried over the hard drives only) and using a spare server we got it up and running again. The problem is still around, leaving me to believe it has to be software somehow...
Anyone have any ideas?
