Laptop no display on screen?

I have a laptop that will not display anything on the screen at all during the boot process or anything. When you plug in an external monitor it will display the dell screen as it boots but when windows starts loading it goes black also, however when you boot in safe mode, the External monitor displays everything and works fine but at no point is anything ever displayed on the laptop screen. Do I have a bad screen or could this possibly be a driver?

Have you tried toggling Fn - F7?

This belongs to a friend of mine and she brought be the laptop with the power inverter she had been using that goes to another laptop, when it boots up(connected to an external monitor) it says that this is only a 65w inverter and needs a 90w that came with the computer to perform properly. There is not even a faint image displayed on the screen, It's just black. Could this be my problem? why would it only boot in safe mode plugged into the external monitor?
there is another possibility the lid switch.
look heere for an example :  http://forum.notebookreview.com/hp-pavilion-notebooks/225848-how-fix-dv2000-lid-switch-backlight-issue.html
CJ27, Have you tried booting it into VGA mode, or opening in Safe mode, adjusting the display settings down, then rebooting?

I've seen this before and nine times out of ten its the resolution is set to high when booting in normal mode.

That is why it works ok in safe mode and not in normal mode.

Also be worth trying the correct power adapter for the laptop, I would avoid using anything that is not the correct voltage for the equipment.

I'll be keeping my bets on dead laptop screen and wrong resolution for external monitor...

fell free to prove me wrong  :)

In this case, i would suspect incompatible of drivers OR conflick of the display drivers causing of this .... under safe mode, try to Roll Back the Drivers or install the latest graphic drivers on that PC.

Hope this help.

Just Ran Dell Diagnostics and it returned this error:

 2000 - 0321 Unable to detect LCD.
