- Run Exchange Best Practice Analyzer tool on the server first and see it does report any error for port 25.
First thing have you created send connector in Exchange server to send mail thru smart host and pointed to your external mail server? here external email server is an SMTP relay server or its service provider's smart host? give some more details on your outgoing configurations

i have created a send connector I only have the one machine so there is no edge server. Using domain MX records as route email.
Check your firewall as it sounds like you have Port 25 blocked somewhere. Either on your firewall or on the server firewall.
Run "Fix My Network" from SBS console

You must be able to telnet using port 25, there is any firewall or router between your Exchange box and Internet?, another thing could be your ISP blocking port 25, check with them just in case.

I can telnet to isp mail server on port 25 - but no where else. Does that mean the ISP is blocking 25?
