Tried all of the usb options but no joy. It will boot off a floppy drive on a win98 boot disk but not the dvd drive. The link shows win2flash but the recovery disk is a toshiba recovery disk not an os disk ? any other options ?

So it boots off floppy?

See here http://www.bootdisk.info/articles.php?action=show&id=67 on how to add USB drivers to your floppy disk.

If it recognises the DVD drive this way you should be able to install.

Have found something called flashboot which works initially but then complains about the drive letters on the machine as the usb drive is not drive d. formated the hard drive thinking this may sort it but no joy.

The above suggestiuons are ok but there is no bootable exe etc to load from on the dvd ?

only allows for an os install and this is a toshiba branded recovery disk. Going round in circles with this ? it is not xp but a toshiba boot disk with an image loaded on it by the looks of things ?

any other ideas ?

Nope.

You could try cleaning the lens of the DVD drive if it isn't working or replace it (expensive) but that's all I can think of.
Have you tried removing the internal, failed, DVD, so that the external has a chance to be the same drive letter as the internal had been?

These vendor-supplied recovery DVDs tend to be very sensitive to the HW they're used on; any significant changes and they won't boot.

Your only options may be to either
1) repair the internal DVD, or,
2) Have Toshiba reinstall the OS
3) Purchase a new OS license.

The only way was to buy another drive and even then it only wokred when the machine was on the side so I had to push the DVD down to get it to detect any disks.

Weird but true.

Nothing would work but a new drive and put the machine on its side. think the unit has been dropped and everything was out of alighment.
