Press and hold the icon until it starts to shake, then drag it to the screen you want it on and then press the Home button.

Sorry - iPhone4 does not seem to have a contacts icon!  My 3Gs has!  That's progress for you : )
Click on the phone button and you should be able to access your contacts from there.
I deliverately didn't upgrade to an iPhone 4 as I am a Windows Mobile person and I can't do the things I need with an iPhone.

Is the Windows Mobile op sys very good / stable?

There is a contacts Icon somewhere.  I found it this morn.  Made it "wobble" but it was the only icon on the screen, didnt know how to shift it to the main screen

WIndows Mobile is okay - it has it's foibles that involves a reboot every now and again.  I use mine with plenty of extra software on it to make mine work the way I want it to, but it works.
When the icon is wobbling, just put your finger on it, slide the icon to the screen you want it and then let go.
Once it is there - press the home button to stop it wobbling!
