I have a server that I am backing up the System State, but the backups will not work. All I get is the message "Replica is Inconsistent".

Try this command from command prompt
ServerManagerCmd -install Backup-Features
in order to backup the system state in Windows 2008 you need to enable the Windows Server 2008 Backup Features. The command above enables the feature.

This message can occur due to many reason. Let's start drilling it down to the cause
-did thus ever work OK? Or is it the first time you are trying to backup the server?
- if this is the first attemp to backup the server, did you set it to automatic replica creation or manual?also are the local backup utilities installed on the protected servers
- if this is something that was working fine until now, the replica might be out of space. Do a modify protection group and increase replica and recovery point volume size and theb create a consistency check. That should do the trick.

qbarrientos, It looks like everything was already installed. This is the message I received when running the command you sent:

NoChange: No changes were made because the roles and features specified in the answer file are already installed, or have already been removed from the local computer.

I believe it worked at one time. I do have a few servers that will sometimes work , but sometimes requires a few manual consistency checks, but little success with that lately. I don't recall if it worked the first time or not. This has been a problem for a while, I just haven't been able to find a place to get help with these kind of problems. As far as consistency checks goes, I don't have te box checked for this to be scheduled. What local backup utilities? I am guessing I do, but not sure how to check that.

The replica shouldn't be out of space. I have a ton of space on both the backup server and the servers being backed up. The example of the server I am dealing with has the following information:

Replica volume: 15.00GB allocated, 6.86 GB used | Recovery point volume: 130.00 GB allocated, 64.06 GB used.   There is 6.9 GB free on the C drive on that server.

did you try doing a manual replica creation and see if that sorts the issue? is DPM 2007 or 2010? if 2007, is it service packed? I had few issues with the release version but all is fine with the latest service pack, can you try?

DPM 2007. How do I tell if I have a service pack installed? Which service pack is the latest?

my installation version says 2.0.8811.0 and its very stable.

Thanks for all of the help guys. I have it working, but not sure how to assign the points. The problem was that the server apparently needed more space on the C drive. I know that itsmein stated " the replica might be out of space. Do a modify protection group and increase replica and recovery point volume size and theb create a consistency check.". I assumed that by increasing the replica and recovery points that you are increasing space available for the server's backups on the backup server. The link that gbarrientos sent soudns like I need to make sure that there is enough space on the server I am backing up. I didn't want to award points with an incorrect understanding of DPM terms, so I am hoping you guys can help me with this. I will then assign the points. Thanks.
Im fine with a 50/50 split

yup. 50/50 sounds fine.
