My Backups do not appear to be backing up Exchange or DHCP

My NTBackups - Full, Exchange and System State are not backing up the Exchange databases or DHCP - can anybody offer me any help on why this is?

I wear a lot of hats - Developer, Database Administrator, Help Desk, etc., so I know a lot of things but not a lot about one thing. Experts Exchange gives me answers from people who do know a lot about one thing, in a easy to use platform." -Todd S.

How did you set up your NTBACKUP ?

I have used both command line and GUI for all three.  The command line looks as follows -

ntbackup backup systemstate /j "Bencomms_Systemstate_3" /F "c:\systemstate_3.bkf" /V:yes /SNAP:off

Notice I have used the snap parameter to not use Shadow copy as I believe it to be corrupt.

My Exchange backup file is about 8gb and my edb and stm files also add up to about 8gb which suggests to me the backups are working but on restore, the files do not appear in \\bencomms\c$\Program Files\Exchsrvr\MDBDATA.  (not sure where DHCP db is stored)
Krzysztof PytkoSenior Active Directory EngineerCommented:
for exchange and system state you need shadow copy because there are open files. DHCP settings and database is located under %WINDIR%\SYSTEM32\DHCP

So as my shadow copy is corrupt I cannot backup system state and exchange?
Krzysztof PytkoSenior Active Directory EngineerCommented:
Why is corrupt? Does youe VSS service is not running at all?
fuzzyfreakAuthor Commented:
Do you mean my VSC service which is set to manual?

It is corrupt as I have a bad block on my drive, I am assuming shadow copy files are located on this bad block.  I have tried deleting and recreating the shadow copy - didn't work.
Krzysztof PytkoSenior Active Directory EngineerCommented:
OK, to use Shadow Copy in backup, yo need only VSS service active and NT Backup has to have Shado Copy check box enabled. That's all.
fuzzyfreakAuthor Commented:
Yes, but what if my shadow copy is corrupt?  The backups give me warnings if it uses shadow copy.  what is the VSS service?  do you mean VSC?  Where is the Shadow Copy check box?
Krzysztof PytkoSenior Active Directory EngineerCommented:
Yes, VSS is Volume Shadow Copy Service. I have no access to english OS version right now, so I will post screen tomorrow morning, ok? It is configured in advanced options in backup.
fuzzyfreakAuthor Commented:
It uses shadow copy by default, my problem is my shadow copy is corrupt, which is why restoring system state isn't working for me, but why exchange and DHCP are not restoring I do not know.
Krzysztof PytkoSenior Active Directory EngineerCommented:
because of open files :) They are still in use :)
Download Cobian backup its free and test it. Maybe it would be a solution for you :)

fuzzyfreakAuthor Commented:
OK, I am now a little confused.  I downloaded Cobian but cannot see how I backup Exchange and System State with this and how would I resolve the corrupt shadow copy issue?
Krzysztof PytkoSenior Active Directory EngineerCommented:
OH, you cannot. I was pretty sure that it has this function. My mistake, sorry.
fuzzyfreakAuthor Commented:
So I still have this problem with my shadow copy - shall I open a new question?
Krzysztof PytkoSenior Active Directory EngineerCommented:
No, you don't have to.

I don't know which OS do you have.

Please try with this article, maybe it would solve your VSS problem

fuzzyfreakAuthor Commented:
Hotfix unnecessary - Setup has detected that the service pack version of this system is newer than the update you are applying.  There is no need to install this update.
fuzzyfreakAuthor Commented:
I really think I should open a new question to deal with my corrupt shadow copy and how to get a valid backup of Exchange and System State from it.
