I would like to purchase a Laptop on which I can run multiple virtual machines without a problem. I was thinking of loading ESX server onto it. I found that the Alienware M17x is a very powerful machine.  I would like to know if:-

1. Anyone has loaded ESX server on to this laptop
2. Any other laptop which will do the job just aswell
3. Any other related advice would be great.

Thanks

I am using a Dell Studio 1558 with a Core i7-720 QM CPU, 6 GB DDR3-1333 MHz RAM, 500 GB SATA III HDD.

This is my lab setup.

Host - Windows 7 x64 Ultimate
Software - VMware Workstation v7.0.1

I have installed ESXi v4.1 and ESXi v4.0 U1 and U2 as well as VMs within VMware Workstation.

Openfiler is also running as a VM and so is my vCenter 4.1.

I am able to test HA and DRS, although Fault Tolerance and running nested x64 VMs within the ESXi VMs is not possible in this case.

I would not suggest for an Alienware if you are only going to concentrate on setting up a lab for VMware.

you would be better getting a quad core system, 64 OS such as Windows 7, and as much RAM as the system can take.  Then buy a VMware 7.0 Workstation license and start setting up test systems.

no need for Alienware unit unless your an avid gamer, as well as using VMware.
