Can Exchange Server 2007 be installed on Server 2008 R2?

Hi, I thought I read that Exchange Server 2007 was not going to be supported as a viable install on Server 2008 R2, but I was reading a forum earlier that mentioned another IT Admin that has Exchange 2007 running on Server 2008.

So, can I run Exchange 2007 SP1 on Server 2008 R2 or should I just stick with Server 2003 x64?

Thanks in advance.

You can install Exchange 2007 SP3 on Windows 2008 R2 (64bit)
Exchange 2007 SP1 can be installed on Windows 2003 (64bit) & Windows 2008 SP1 or SP2 (64bit).

I would recommend you to install Exchange 2007 SP3 on Windows 2008 R2 for Best Performance.
Hello,

you did not mention your server(S) specs, server 2008 r2 is much more demanding than 2003 please consider, AshwinRaj111 is right by recommending
and I would too even if it demands new or upgraded hardware.

Cool.  Just wasn't sure.  I had heard that Microsoft was looking at not supporting Exchange 2007 on 2008 R2, but Exchange 2010 would be supported on 2008 R2.

Glad to hear that they changed their minds.

Thanks again.

Quote from technet:

"Although you cannot install Exchange 2007 RTM on a server running Windows Server 2008, Exchange 2007 RTM is supported for use with Windows Server 2008 directory servers. Similarly, Exchange Server 2003 Service Pack 2 (SP2) cannot be installed on computers running Windows Server 2008, but it is supported for use with Windows Server 2008 directory servers."

Exchange Server 2007 SP1 and up is not supported on Windows Server 2008 R2. It can run on Windows Server 2008

Microsoft Still does not support Exchange 2007 SP1 or SP2 on Windows 2008 R2.
This is because Microsoft have not tested the Functioning for Exchange 2007 SP1 or SP2 on Windows 2008 R2 as it was not available at the point when Exchange 2007 SP1 or SP2 was launced.
But when Exchange 2007 SP3 was launced Windows 2008 R2 was available and hence tested. And this is supported.
I don't understand why are you planing to stick to E2007 when 2010 s out long ago..
2008 r2 x64 and exchange 2010 work great together.

Yeah, well, we have paid for Exchange 2007 and not for 2010...yet.

How well does Exchange 2010 work with Outlook 2007 clients?
