When I open a WORD document using MS Office 2003 it takes longer than 20 seconds to open the Word document.  When same document is opened on another pc it opens immediately.

If you open just MS Word (without trying to open any document) does it do the same thing?

We recently had this issue, and it was due to the NORMAL.DOT being problematic.  I deleted the file (renaming it works too) and then relaunch MS Word, and Word will recreate it.

You should be able to find it here:

C:\Documents and Settings\<Username>\Application Data\Microsoft\Templates

Delete NORMAL.DOT from C:\Documents and Settings\YourUsername\Application Data\Microsoft\Templates

an easy way to test if it is an addin or template (such as normal.dot) is to type the following into the run command on your PC.

Go to Start - Run

Type:  winword /a

This will open the application (word) without any addins or templates loaded, basically in Safe Mode.  Then try to open the file.  This will confirm if the problem lies in an addin loaded.

Solution was disabling the DDE in the 'Folder Options' on any DOC file and DOCX files.

Researched and found disabling the DDE to be the solution in Folder Options.
