Going from Microsoft Essential Business Server to Stand Alone servers

We are currently running Microsoft Essential Business Server 2008 and would like to convert/migrate to the standard products. Since EBS was discontinued we signed up and received our EBS Migration Kit. I have a two part question.

1. Have any of you migrated off EBS using the same hardware and if so how did it go?
2. Reading through the documentation at one point it sounds like all I need to do is to run the Migration Preparation Tool for EBS and we are left with servers that have the EBS uniqueness removed from them and can't be upgraded to any newer versions, but will continue to function correctly. Other documentation makes it sound like I need to run the Migration Prep. tool, move all the roles off the servers and then wipe and rebuild them with the same names.Which is correct?

Ideally we would have some new servers and could decommission the ones and move to the others but we don't have that luxury at this point.

I had a client that purchased EBS, then migrated to regular servers with forefront.  The tool does exactly that - the servers will still run, but in my experience EBS seems a bit corky from time to time.  In all honesty, the best scenario is to start with a fresh OS - not sure how much of that is an option for you.  If you use the tool you may want to ensure that windows updates are ran an up to date afterwards, but you will not have the functionality of 08 R2 - just 08.
