Cisco: Possible to upgrade IOS on switch out of warranty but still supported?

I need to purchase several switches for an upgrade.  I am considering Cisco’s SMARtnet for the troubleshooting functionality.  I am reviewing the “Cisco SMARTnet Servics” PDF and they have a chart that says the standard warranty, the one that allows you to replace software media during first 90 days, says that Cisco IOS software updates and upgrades are not supported and that I have to have the SMARTnet services.

So my questions:

1) If I want to update the IOS for, let’s say, 5 3750 switches, would I need a SMARTnet subscription for all 5 switches?

2) Can I just have one (1) 3750 covered and piggyback the updates to the others?

3) Does Cisco really require me to have SMARTnet subscription for all Cisco devices if I want to upgrade IOS?

And help with sources would be greatly appreciated.
