Windows 7 x64 memory usage

Hello,

I am running Windows 7 Prof x64 and I am concerned about its memory usage. Even when the computer was rebooted it uses up front 1.85GB of memory. I have 8G available however that sounds a lot to me. I have Office 2010, a AV scanner, yahoo messenger, snag it, nero 9, steam and a couple other smaller apps installed.
I have laptop which runs Windows 7 x32 with very similar applications (besides steam) and that uses half of the memory 900 MB when idle.

I did some reading on this and I saw several articles where people had the same issue but to be honest the answers went from "That is normal" to "You have an app with a memory leak installed".

Has anybody made the same or similar expirience and is that memory usage really normal.

Thank you

The amount of memory you are using is completely normal from my point of view. I have 8Gb on my T61p Thinkpad (Windows 7 Pro 64-bit) and about 2Gb is used (and I rebooted after some installs about 4 hours ago). Look in Task Manager under Processes and see what is using memory, but unless you see something suspect, I don't think you have any problem. Better for Windows to use memory it has and be nice and smooth. I never see any problem leakage on my machine.  ... Thinkpads_User

Mc2012,
I agree with Thinkpads_user. I have 2 Win7 machines infront of me now and they are 1.52 and 1.75 with the first being a fresh install with AV and Office 2010. I am not thinking there is a leak or a problem.

For what it's worth,

1.85 GB RAM usage is just fine.
If a memory leak were present, RAM usage would continue to climb until it consumed all available RAM.
When my system was Vista x64, an IDT audio codec would start at ~50 MB REM usage.  Within hours, it was up to nearly 2 GB RAM usage.  That's a memory leak.

Win7 32 bit also takes 930 Mb on a total of 2 GB on my pc

my win7 64 bit takes about 1 Gb out of 8 Gb; but it is a basic install; only W7, AVG - no office..

The more memory you have, the more memory Windows will use. You need at least 3Gb for a 64-bit machine with everything loaded, and 4Gb is better. At that point, Windows 7 will use between 1.5 and 2 Gb depending on what is loaded. Laptops tend to have more things running than desktop, for example.

I put 8Gb in my Thinkpad because I run virtual machines and 8Gb allows me to run several simultaneously,
