When I plug the device in, xp recognizes it and adds 4 devices.  As soon as I insert a sandisk, xp hangs up and I have to remove the disk in order to do anything on my pc.  Any suggestions?

Have you verified in another computer?  Could be a bad formated card.

I just tried it on another  PC, except it was running windows 7.  It acted the same way.  Reader was recognized but as soon as the sandisk was inserted, the system froze until the disk was removed.  The system tried to install a driver for the reader but it said the install failed.
Try a different flash card if you can.. Sounds like the reader or card and not the PC.  It doesnt require any special drivers.. it works or doesnt.

also - verify if that reader accepts cards of that size; many do not accept big size cards
or post model of reader and card !

Between the two answers which were awarded points,  I am concluding that the card reader is defective.  The reader would not work using another computer, yet the card was readable using a different card reader.  The 'bad' card reader was equipped with 3 different card slots, one being the size of the disk I was using.
