I installed sql server 2005 AND SQL Server Management Studio.
In the server named pipes are enabled and server service restarted.
I also created an Alias called SQLPIPE.

I can login to the management studio with Windows or SQL access and manage everything.

There are multiple sqls on three servers.

The problem server is ACCT

When I try to access via my VFP9 with ACCT\SQLEXPRESS  with either type of authentication I get:

Connection failied:
SQL State '01000'
SQL Server Error: 67
ODBCSQL Server Driver ConnetionOpen(Connect())
SQLSTATE /08001;
SQL Server Error 17
blah blah Server does not exist or access denied.

Have you enabled remote connections for ACCT\SQLEXPRESS instance as listed below:

http://www.linglom.com/2007/08/31/enable-remote-connection-to-sql-server-2005-express/

And do make sure that you have TCP IP port configured apart from the existing TCP ports used by other instances of SQL Server.

rrjegan..Thanks, but that was all in place already.
problem solved.  this was an issue with the software where some items in the server schema and registry needed to be cleaned out manually.
