Photoshop CS4: "Could not complete your request because of a program error"

We're running Photoshop CS4 on a Mac running Snow Leopard 10.6.4. Whenever this user tries to save a .JPG (any JPEG) as a .TIFF, she gets this message.  I've tried all the standard stuff.  Getting rid of preference files, reinstalling CS4, patching it up to the latest revision.  This is a brand new computer -- plenty of RAM, hard drive space, and nothing else is running while we're trying this.

I searched all over, but most of the docs I found were related to CS2.  I tried the troubleshooting steps in them anyway, but they didn't help.  I was looking for maybe a Photoshop log of some sort, that might have more detail in it, but I have no idea where to find it.

Hi, you may have already tried this but these are the official steps from Adobe Tech Notes which can be good for working through errors and freezes:

(It's for CS4 on the MAC).

Your font cache could be corrupt.  here are a few programs than can be used to fix that:
Onyx
http://www.apple.com/downloads/macosx/system_disk_utilities/onyx.html

or

FontNuke
http://download.cnet.com/FontNuke/3000-18512_4-94220.html

or you can delete some caches by booting into safe mode (hold Shift key at bootup)

You might want to try this one first (sorry, after I read about the others, this one seemed to work for people better)
This is a trial version
http://www.maintain.se/cocktail/index.php

It repairs the disk permissions and and can clear the cache files (along with other utilities).
