Most people just install ActivePerl on Windows.  No need to compile as it is a Windows installer.

ActivePerl (http://www.activestate.com/) is probably the most common Windows install of Perl but it has issues with many modules not working from CPAN - you have to get ActiveState specific versions (or at least that's how it worked last time I looked at it several years ago).

I prefer installing Cygwin (http://www.cygwin.com/) and running perl from there.  It still has more issues with CPAN modules than a real version of Unix but can utilize many more of them than ActiveState.

ActivePerl v5.8.8 works fine for me. I got dmake automatically downloaded and setup when I installed MinGW using ppm.

do I have to install an specific version if platform is 64 bit?

thanks.
Justin MathewsCommented:
ActivePerl 64 bit edition can be downloaded from:

I installed that version perl64 but the server where i am installing it is behind a firewall, so everytime i try to download and install new modules, the connection gets timeout.

i then go to capn and manually download the needed modules, unzipped them, and start having issues about the c compiler, so i downloaded the msi of mingw, then the next error was about nmae not installed, and i got stuck on this part. so i started reading about strawberry perl, and was wondering if than engine would work just as active state works.

thanks.
