Interesting - I would be interested in knowing what the rep says. I don't have this particular model switch myself. There are a couple of SFPs without the RGD spec listed on the datasheet though. I had always thought the &quot;wiring&quot; for the SFP was pretty universal - and if the IOS supports one LX SFP it should support another.

We are using IE-3000 because of its smaller size factor than other switches but Cisco recommends the GLC-LX-SM-<b>RGD</b> sfp. Can the IE-3000 use non rugged SFP? &nbsp; Would it be possible to just use a GLC-LX-SM? &nbsp;Does anyone have experience with this? &nbsp;Any supporting documentation?<br />

Cisco IE-3000:  Use non rugged SFP - possible?

A switch is a device that filters and forwards packets of data between LAN segments. Switches operate at the data link layer or the network layer of the Open Systems Interconnection (OSI) Reference Model and therefore support any packet protocol. LANs that use switches to join segments are called switched LANs or, in the case of Ethernet networks, switched Ethernet LANs. A hub is a connection point for devices in a network. Hubs are commonly used to connect segments of a LAN. A hub contains multiple ports; when a packet arrives at one port, it is copied to the other ports so that all segments of the LAN can see all packets.
