Chipset Drivers for ASUS K8V-VM motherboard
I have an ASUS K8V-VM motherboard for which I don't have a cd with chipset drivers. I have had to replace the hard drive and need chipset drivers. I don't have the original cd with the chipset drivers. I have looked online and have not been able to find them to download. I have found drivers for the motherboard and bios updates but no list of chipset drivers nor a download. Can someone tell me where I can find these or from where I can obtain a cd?

I have downloaded the chip set drivers on to a cd, but shouldn't it be a boot cd? It seems whenever I have loaded the chipset, I usually boot from the cd and load it before anything else.

The chipset driver is installed when you are in the operating system, it is not installed from a boot cd.

Then I have another problem. My computer keeps locking up whe I boot it. Sometimes it will boot past the post and then freeze while loading the operating system. Since it has a new clean hard drive, it doesn't let me get into the bios to check settings. How do I get the bios back? I thought the chipset would restore it. Is that a different download that I need to do and run?

a disk has nothing to to with the bios access -  you enter it during the boot phase, by using the Del key - or F2; it is shown on the screen during boot.
you can also reset the bios by removing the AC, and Bios battery from the board for a minute - then reconnect and test

I think the other experts have explained very well how to download the drivers and access the BIOS, but I have a feeling that I know what you are getting confused about.

When installing Windows XP or Server 2003 you may have seen a text prompt at the bottom of the screen to "Press F6 if you need to install a 3rd party SCSI or RAID driver", as shown in the screenshot here:
http://pcsupport.about.com/od/operatingsystems/ss/installxpnew1_3.htm
This method was provided so that you could install drivers for a SATA hard drive or else the setup process may not have been able to continue, and it was necessary to install some such drivers during that early low-level stage of booting to the setup CD.  Perhaps this is what you are thinking about when you said earlier:
"It seems whenever I have loaded the chipset, I usually boot from the cd and load it before anything else".

Your computer's "Chipset" comprises the various controller chips on the motherboard and therefore also the interfaces that they have control over.  "Chipset Drivers" form a software layer between the low-level BIOS and the Operating System so that they can talk to each other.  Windows generally installs generic driver support that allows your computer to boot after the setup and work. Thereafter, you can install the full and updated manufacturer's drivers from within Windows.

The "low level" driver setup mentioned above with the F6 key is the exception, but it may not be relevant to you.

What version of Windows are you trying to install?

I've tried Xp and Windows 7. But the problem is, I don't seem to have access to a bios. Before I changed out the hard drive I used to get an ASUS splash screen that would pop up. Once it "flashed" I could hit the F8 key and get into the bios. Now there is no splash screen and I don't seem to be able to load the bios.

ah - then try this to reset the bios : remove AC cord, and the bios battery as i posted !

OK. I've been trying to figure out why this computer is not starting up for days now. I'm going to quit guessing. Here is what is going on.

The computer began freezing while running XP SP3. Eventually it got to the point where it would freeze during the load up of the OS. The process bar would move initially then would stop and remain that way for hours. Initially I thought there was an incompatibility problem or problem with settings for some new memory I had installed. I put the old memory back in but had the same results. I posted on expert exchange and dbrunton wisely suggested to check more than the memory. After running diagnostics on the memory and hard drive, the memory tested out fine but the hard drive failed the SMART pretest and showed high temp. I replaced the hard drive and began trying to reload an OS.

I first tried XP since that is what was on it before. After several starts, I got the system to boot from the CD and install XP. When the system rebooted, it locked up at the OS load. Same place as before. I decided to try an install Windows 7. I deleted the partitions and re-created them (the HD is 500GB. I split it into 2 equal partitions) and ran the install for Windows 7. After completing the install, Windows 7 went to reboot. It froze as the four colored dots above "Starting Windows" began to converge. Since I couldn't find anything on the ASUS site for drivers for Windows 7, I decided it might be a problem so decided to once again step back to XP.

I unplugged the power and pulled the CMOS battery to reset the bios. I partitioned and re-created the partitions and ran the install for XP. It loaded and re booted. Every time it goes to reboot, when it begins to start back up, it sits there with the disk light lit but nothing happening. If I hit the reset button it will give me the "ok" beep and proceed to load whatever I'm running at the time. In this instance, XP. It started XP but then when I tried to do updates, it told me "the requested lookup key was not found in any active activation context" I removed IE to reinstall. When I went to do the reboot before the reinstall of IE, it froze when it began to load the OS. I decided to, once more, try to load Windows 7. It had the same problem with the HD indicator light coming on and staying lit but nothing happening. I pushed the reset and it aksed me to hit any key to boot from the cd. I did and it began to load. Whe it got to the screen ith the four color dots above "Starting Windows", it froze.

I am at wits end trying to figure this out. I appreciate the help I have been given so far but am at wits end. Does anyone have any ideas of why it is acting this way. I'm beginning to wonder if either the Northbridge is acting up or my controller is bad. I have a dvd rom hooked to the primary IDE controller and the HD is hooked into one of two SATA slots.

With only the CPU, video, monitor and power connected, it starts normally. When I connect the keyboard, it still starts normally. As soon as I connect anything else, be ti mouse or dvd it starts the problem. The disk light comes on (even though the HD is not connected) and stays on and the system doesn't boot. What is that telling me?

Sounds like the motherboard or power supply is dying.

I put in a new power supply and with just the monitor, cpu and video connected. I still get the HD light coming on and no boot.

Check the capacitors on the motherboard.see if any are leaking our bulging.

did you follow my setup in the article??

I did follow your setup from the article and I did check the capacitors. They all seem fine. I'm not sure what's going on with the HD light but I know whenever I start the computer, if the HD light comes on immediately and stays on, the computer isn't going to boot at all. I have the HD completely disconnected. This is the little LED light the is right below the LED showing the computer is on and right next to the Reset switch. I checked against the manual to make sure the connectors from the front panel were connected properly to the motherboard and they are as is shown in the manual.

I think the motherboard is shot.

Components are those devices that are internal to a computer -- the PC boards, the central processor (CPU), the memory (RAM), disk and video controllers and so on.
