Access Data Formatting Problem

I have data from our call center software that exports to a .csv file. In the data are 2 fields that show the call length and wait time for each call received in the format 00:04:35.. I link this file into an Access 2003 table. I have built a query to sum several data points for each days calls and need to provide an average of these 2 fields. Whenever I try to Sum or Average this data, I get a data mismatch error. I'm certain its a formatting issue and have tried different formats when linking the .csv file to no avail. I found one suggestion that used Format([field],"hh:mm:ss"). I tried that in one query and then tried to Sum the data in a second query and got data mismatch again.
Any suggestions, please?
