MS SQL Server sp3 failing to install
I have been trying to install sp3 for a while but each time it fails with a not too helpful message. How can I troubleshoot this problem and where can I find the logs please?
Note: Running on MS Server 2003.

Hi,
Log will be founded at
C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\90\Setup Bootstrap\LOG\Hotfix\
Check this link.

i guess this might be the issue with database location not exisiting .By default the setup creates the Temp_MS_AgentSigningCertif icate_data base Database
on specified default database location,
If the location doesn't exist, it fails to create the database and the setup fails.
Please refer the following link hoope this will help you solve your problem else plese let us know the error log details .

Brichsoft: Just waiting for some downtime to carry out an action on the server. The log indicates a problem and suggests a course of action to take.

Hope to carry out some testing soon.

Brichsoft: There is a previous update that is incomplete for one particular instance, however the original temp install directory is long gone. What options do I have, could I re-apply sp2 to that instance?

I get 9.00.4035.00 SP3 Express Edition however I'm not able to complete the installation as the install folder is missing. If I need to re-apply sp3 to that one instance how could I achieve that?

Awaiting down time for a reboot after a reg hack to enable the incomplete install to complete.

I found some usefull stuff at this link:
http://www.symantec.com/connect/forums/security-update-sql-server-2005-service-pack-3-kb970892-fails-install
I used the reg hack as detailed below and then followed the advice to complete the install for the instance that was failing. After a reboot Windows Update completed KB970892 successfully.
1. Go to Run, type regedit, and click ok, or press Enter.
2. Back up your registry, if you don't know how to do this, google it...
3. In Regedit, go to [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWA RE\Microso ft\Microso ft SQL
Server\MSSQL.1\Setup]
[Note that if you have multiple instances of MSSQL installed, the reg key
might be different for you]
4. find the Resume REG_DWORD, and change its decimal value from 1, to 0.
5. install the update, and restart the machine.
6. Complete the failed SQL install for the instance that fails via the Control Panel Add/Remove programs.
If you don't want to install this update using the automatic update
(WUAUCLT), you can download the hotfix directly from microsoft, just google
"download KB970892 ". you will still need to manually change the registy
"Resume" value, or else the hotfix will fail to install.

Brichsoft: You get the points as you provided the pointers and help that enabled me to find out what the update was failing on.
