Exchange 2007 and Universal and Global group question

I have Exchange 2007 which we migrated from 2003. We have several Global Security groups and several Distribution Groups. We have several users that are on another Exchange server (Front End) and when those users attempt to send email to our Global Security groups the email never gets delivered, nor does it bounce, it just disappears. Users that are on the our server (Back End) can send to those groups no problem. Is it true that Exchange 2007 only supports Universal groups? I read that pre-existing Domain Global groups are supported, but why are users having trouble sending email? Should I convert all Global Security groups to Universal?

1- users cannot be homes to front end server.
2- Exchange 2007 uses only universal groups, yes that is correct

Can you explain #1, I am not sure what you mean...

users mailboxes in 2003 are placed on the BE server, FE servers handles email/ protocol traffic only

Do you recommend converting all mail enabled domain global groups to universal and is there any down side to this?

let us map the problem correctly
groups on 2003 are working correctly but users on 2007 cannot send to them? am I right

No, we have two Exchange servers, one in the parent domain and one in the child domain. Both are 2007. Several users that are in the child domain have their mailbox on the Exchang server that is in the parent domain, these users cannot send email to any of the domain global groups, only universal groups. However, users in the child domain can send email to domain global groups with no issues...
